Through a unique musical bond, Bug's five musicians managed to retain a tight rapport despite being spread across the U.S. throughout the early 2000s. Brothers Jeff (guitar) and James (piano) Miley regularly explored their driving and sometimes twisted melodic compositional sensibilities during the decade from 2005 to 2015 with an inspired quintet featuring saxophonist Peter Epstein and the late bassist Roger Shew (1974-2016) and drummer Brian Hamada (1960-2018). The band's 2009 release on Origin Records, The GADfly, captures Bug in peak form navigating an original set of music that clearly showcases the unit as a tight band, with chops and musicality to spare. From the intertwining melodies of "Invernessence" to the auspicious lines of "Wishful Thinking," the music on GADfly digs deep into the modern jazz tradition with a forward-looking vision, taking listeners for a ride the entire way. ... more
